Day One: Flight to SF from ATL is delayed until 7pm, from 4p. We’re off to a rousing start! Oh, and there is a thunderstorm starting up…yes!
Day Two: more later, including pics, but suffice it to say that this was a major boon:

UPDATE: Pictures – very exciting shots of the convention center and my hotel room.

Unsanity has finally released a long-awaited update to ShapeShifter (the premiere theming tool for Mac OS X) that will work on Intel based Macs.
Rejoice, loyal fans!
So far, on our test system (a MBP), it is working beautifully. All themes seem to be working without issue, and there is, as usual, very little in the way of system performance degradation.

Unsanity says…
Still reading? Okay, more warnings – this is still beta software. It might cause your computer to spontaneously begin shooting lasers out of your iSight camera and into your Significant Other’s forehead. And that tends to annoy him/her/it, you know! Seriously – beta means we don’t guarantee stability. Use at your own risk, or wait until the release version.
Still still reading? Great! Here’s what’s fixed:
* The System Preferences application no longer crashes if you preview the same theme multiple times.
* Resolved an issue that could cause application skins not to be applied after previewing a theme in the ShapeShifter preference pane.
* Resolved an issue that could cause color overrides set in guiTweak not to be applied properly.

Over the past few months, since the arrival of the Intel based Macbook series, there have been MANY widely publicized issues with them, including:
severe heat issues, with systems getting unbearably hot (MB and MBP)
high-pitched whining from inside the MBP
serious discoloration on white Macbooks
warping of the external casing and chassis
sleep and power issues
battery issues, including no charging, no detection and inability to boot when on battery power
The various Mac related forums and sites are filled with complaints and pleas for help. The Apple.com discussion forums are a mass of angry and disappointed postings.
I am sad to report, however, that this has hit me personally, also. My MBP was experiencing unreal heat issues, until a recent firmware update that triggered the fans sooner, and it also soon developed an issue whereby the system would shut completely down mere minutes after unplugging AC power.

This Tech Tip is brought to you by the ‘Mac vs. Windows Society’…engaging in pointless battles since 11110111111!
Today’s tip is geared toward those of us (you) who work with their Macs and frequently save files that they need to send to others, including Windows users.
In some cases, it is necessary to make a couple of small changes when sending out these files…the problem is with ‘file extensions’, and it is an age old issue.
For instance, when you create a Word document, it is saved as ‘mydocument.doc’. The ‘.doc’ is the extension. On most Windows applications, that extension is necessary for the computer to know what program opens it.
This tip will help you ease the pain of sending/receiving a file that needs to be used cross-platform.

Dear Apple.
We’ve owned iPods since the first version. In fact, aside from the Nano, we’ve had one of each generation/iteration to date. We’ve been fairly happy overall with your wonderful little music machine.
However, today we come to you, hat in hand, asking for a feature to be added to the next firmware revision (in particular to the 5th gen video, thanks).
As you know, when a track is playing, you can hit the ‘(c)enter’ button and toggle from song position to ratings to the artwork display screen.
We respectfully request that you add the following set of toggles.

stainedBook.info: QA problems on recently purchased white MacBook
This is rather disturbing. Some new Macbook owners are reporting severe staining of their new systems. A quick Google search reveals many, many more reports, as does a quick peek into the Apple Support forums.

[ED. NOTE: Changed to a BonJour configuration as suggested by the Parallels forums. This allows your computers IP address to change without causing drive mapping difficulties. Good call guys! ]
With the release of Parallels Desktop for Mac OS X, Parallels Software has opened up a whole new world to Intel Mac owners. By utilizing the built-in features of the processor itself, Parallels has created the fastest method ever of running Windows from within your Mac.
One of the features of Parallels is the option to share a folder between Windows and your Mac. However, it is quite slow and bulky. The tutorial below, however, shows you how to harness the native sharing prowess of both Windows and your Mac, making for much faster and more reliable document sharing.
As a bonus, we’re going to show you how to make Windows use your Macs ‘Home’ folder as the ‘My Documents’ folder! No more shuffling around looking for a file you saved in one OS…everything will be in one place!
Let’s get started, shall we?

Parallels is amazing. If you have a Mac, it is HIGHLY recommended, and the price is very cheap right now, only $49!
Parallels Desktop for Mac is the first solution that gives Apple users the ability to run Windows, Linux or any other operating system and their critical applications at the same time as Mac OS X on any Intel-powered iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook or MacBook Pro.
Unlike dual-boot solutions, in which users must completely shut down Mac OS X and endure a full OS start-up cycle to access a important application, Parallels Desktop for Mac empowers users with the ability to run important Windows programs like Outlook, Access, Internet Explorer and all other applications without having to give up the usability and functionality of their Mac OS X machine even for a few minutes.
Why is Parallels Desktop the best solution for running Windows on a Mac?

Imagine, if you will, a ziplock bag with a grape in it. Imagine holding the bag open, then slowly zipping the top of the bag closed. Can you visualize the bubble in the bag where it is filled only with air?
Now imagine taking one of those cheesy dehydrator things that Ron Popeil sells and sucking all of the air out of that bag until it is barely larger than the grape it contains.
Congratulations, you’ve just visualized the archiving of a computer file!
