In an interesting development, the KISS Alive box set that was on iTunes yesterday for $1.49 is now a more realistic $39.96, and all comments posted by users have been deleted. Additionally, the album now contains 69 tracks as opposed to 70 yesterday.
Very curious as to what happened here, and even more curious how much this mistake cost Apple. If 1000 people got the deal, that means Apple lost over $38,000. 10,000 users is over $380,000. That figure is not entirely out of the question either, as the KISS deal seemed to spread quickly thorough many online communities.
Presumably Apple will have to pay the record company for their losses, and my guess is that someone somewhere is contemplating an unemployed holiday season.
Apple does, however, seem to be adopting an ‘our mistake, your advantage’ approach, as the songs purchases seem to be playing and transferring fine. Despite your musical tastes, I think most would agree that 70 songs for $1.49 was a deal that couldn’t be passed up.
We’ve contacted Apple and the management of KISS to find out more about the situation and what may have happened, but have yet to get a response. We’ll update you if we learn anything more.
